Mercedes Schlapp has no easy job in her role in the role of White House adviser for strategic communication. She's faced with a president that acts as his own communication director as well as numerous legal fights that can throw off the administration's messaging strategy and Cabinet secretaries ensnared in their own controversies. Schlapp has kept her focus all the time, working closely with White House policy and political teams, as well as legislative affairs team and shops. There was a great deal of media attention when she was announced as a possible replacement for Hope Hicks, the communications director. It was a tense battle. The allies of Schlapp and Tony Sayegh started arguing in the media. Schlapp claimed that, following the time the Washington Examiner had published an article with negative comments about Sayegh's persona, she phoned Sayegh for a private conversation.
